Make a Mini Clay Pot Sombrero — Easy DIY Fiesta Hat for Home or Garden
Create a cheerful miniature sombrero using tiny terracotta pots and saucers — a quick, inexpensive craft that adds Mexican flair to shelves, centerpieces, or party decor. This project uses basic acrylic paint, trim (rickrack) and pom‑pom fringe glued to a saucer rim; the pot sits inverted as the crown of the hat. It’s simple enough for a craft afternoon and easy to adapt in color and size.

These clay pot hats are intended for indoor use. To use outdoors, seal the paint and attach outdoor‑safe trim and glue. A three‑inch pot works well for most decorative uses; you can also scale the idea up or down by using smaller or larger pots. The saucer becomes the hat brim — choose a saucer size that makes a suitable rim for your pot.
Materials
• Terracotta pots – this project uses 3‑inch pots.
• Terracotta saucers – this project uses 4.5‑inch saucers.
• Acrylic paint (example: yellow for the hat body) and a paintbrush.
• Trim: rickrack for the band.
• Fringe: pom‑pom fringe for the brim.
• Glue gun and glue sticks, scissors.

How to make this Clay Pot Sombrero
Step One — Prepare
Wipe down the pots and saucers to remove dirt. If you rinse them, allow them to dry completely before painting. Set up a protected work area for painting.
Step Two — Paint
Turn the pots upside down and paint the outer surfaces; you don’t need to paint the inside or the pot rim unless you want to. Paint the insides and rims of the saucers. Allow paint to dry, then apply a second coat if needed. In the example shown, the pot is painted yellow and the rim has a contrasting blue band.
Step Three — Decorate and assemble
Glue rickrack around the pot over the painted band. Glue a small pom‑pom over the drain hole if desired. Attach pom‑pom fringe to the edge of the saucer to form the brim. You can glue the pot to the saucer permanently or leave them separate for easier storage.
Tips
• Use outdoor‑rated sealant and weatherproof glue if you plan to display the hats outside.
• Mix colors and trims for variety — the project adapts easily to different themes and sizes.
