MATERIALS

Sugar ‘n Cream Yarn (100% Cotton; 70.9 g/ 2.5oz.; 109 m/120yds); Worsted weight;

or Caron Simply Soft (100% acrylic 6oz/170g; 315yds/288m); Worsted weight;

  • Main Color (MC)

(9719 Soft Pink ) or (9712 Soft Blue) – approx. 80 – 120 yds;

  • Contrast A

(9701 White) – approx. 5 yds;

  • Button.
  • Matching thread and needle.

CROCHET HOOK

7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook, OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

GAUGE

15 dc and 7 rows to 4”/10 cm

SPECIAL STITCH

“butterfly wing” – (2 dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, 2 dc), or (2 dc, ch 2, sc, ch 1, sc, ch 2, 2 dc).

INSTRUCTIONS

Notes:

  1. Instructions are written for the smallest size with changes for larger sizes given in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes.
  2. A hat is worked in rounds.
  3. For ease in working, circle all numbers pertaining to size you’re making.
  4. To avoid mistake(s), count stitches in each round, or row when finished.
  5. Ch 3 (4) at beg of rounds count as dc throughout.

HAT

With MC, ch 5, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (count as dc), work 9 (10, 11) dc in ring; join with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 10 (11, 12) dc.

Rnd 2: (Ch 5, sc, ch 2, dc) in same st, * (dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, dc) in next st, rep from * around; join with sl st in third ch of beg ch 5 – 10 (11, 12) petals.

Rnd 3: (Ch 5, sc, ch 2, dc) in same space, skip 7 sts, * (dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, dc) = “butterfly wing” in next space between two dc, skip 7 sts, rep from * around; join with sl st in third ch of beg ch 5 – 10 (11, 12) “butterfly wings“.

Rnd 4: (Ch 4, dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, skip “butterfly wing”, * (2 dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, 2 dc) = “butterfly wing” in next sp, skip “butterfly wing”, rep from * around; join with sl st to top of beg ch 4 – 10 (11,12) “butterfly wings“.

Rnd(s) 5-6: Repeat Rnd 4 twice.

Rnd 7: (Ch 4, dc, ch 2, sc, ch 1, sc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, skip “butterfly wing”, * (2 dc, ch 2, sc, ch 1, sc, ch 2, 2 dc) = “butterfly wing” in next sp, skip “butterfly wing”, rep from * around; join with sl st to top of beg ch 4 – 10 (11, 12) “butterfly wings“.

Next Rnd(s): Repeat last rnd 7 (8, 9) times more, or until hat measures 6.0” (6.5”, 7.5”) from beg. Fasten off. Secure yarn to WS.

FLOWER

With A, ch 5, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (count as dc), work 9 dc in ring; join with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 10 dc.

Rnd 2: (Ch 5, sc, ch 2, dc) in same st, * (dc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, dc) in next st, rep from * around; join with sl st in third ch of beg ch 5 – 10 petals. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Sew button and Flower to Hat as shown in picture.
