5mm crochet hook
Polyfill
Keychain
Abbreviations (US terms)
sc = Single crochet
ch = Chain
Notes
Use scrap yarn for small hearts; any yarn type works.
Worsted weight yarn is recommended; larger yarn (size 5 or above) results in a bigger keychain.
Crochet heart keychain measures no bigger than 2.5 inches.
Change colors freely; for a hookless bag charm, make the crochet chain longer and sew it into a loop to hook around a bag handle.
Instructions
This pattern is made in rows.
Row 1: Ch x7, then turn.
Row 2: In the second chain from the hook, make a sc. Then sc for the rest of the row. (6)
Ch x1 and turn. Do not work in the turning chain, its just there to help you turn to the next row.
Row 3: Sc in every sc top from the previous row. (6) Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 4: Repeat row 3. (6) Then ch x1 and turn.
Row 5: Sc x3, then ch x1 and turn (3). This row is where we start making the second side of the heart, you do not want to go completely across, only half across.
Row 6 and 7: Repeat row 5. (3). Fasten off and weave in the end.
Proceed to make a second heart, But do not fasten off the yarn at the end.
Now that you have 2 hearts, stack them on top of each other perfectly. You have 2 choices here, you can either sew the heart closed, or you can crochet the edges together.
If you chose to crochet the edges together, you want to take the yarn you didn’t fasten off and start where you left off by creating single crochet stitches along the outside of the hearts. Make sure to grab both sides of the heart when you are creating your stitches so you won't have any holes.
On one of the heart tops you want to make a loop of chains for a keyring to slip through. I suggest you ch x7 and then secure it back to the next available stitch on the edge of the heart so you create a loop.
When you get to the top indent of the heart you want to decrease 3 together. Although this is not a spot that has the tops of stitches, you want to take where you *would* place a sc on the edge and turn it into a decrease. If it doesn’t look 100% like a heart center, we can fix this later on.
When you get to the bottom portion of the heart where the tip is you want to make a sc, ch, then sc.
After closing and stuffing the heart, if it looks like the heart is more like a diamond in shape and less like a heart at the top, that is okay! If you want to make it more heart-like in shape, fasten off your yarn, leave a tail and with your tapestry needle you can make it more shapely.
Weave your yarn over to where the top indent of the heart is, right where you made the decrease. Stick your needle right below the decrease and then loop your yarn over by placing your needle in the same spot on the other side, pull down tightly and secure the yarn. Weave in the ends and your heart shape is more pronounced!
And now you know how to crochet a heart keychain!
