How To Create Scrap Fabric Pillow Cover

I suggest drawing out your design on paper to make your scrap fabric pillow cover. Begin with a round object to create the flower center. Then, add the flower petals. The drawing is a guide for tracing a pattern onto the pillow cover. This will help you determine each flower’s size to create your desired design.

Next, use a sharpie to draw the design on the front of the pillow cover.

How To Prepare Scrap Fabrics

To prepare your scrap fabrics, begin by cutting a 1/2″ notch at the end of the fabric. Then, pull the fabric to rip it into strips. Riping the fabric will make it curl slightly. Remove any excess strings. Continue until you have a good supply of fabric strips.

Next, cut a 1/2″ wide strip of the grey fabric and begin to tie knots into the fabric as close together as possible. Also, cut a strip of the felt fabric 1/4″ wide and tie knots. Tie knots until you reach the ends of the fabric strips.

Finally, cut a piece of the brown burlap for the centers of the sunflowers.

Add Scrap Fabric To Pillow Cover

As you add the fabric to the sunflower pillow cover, you must place a protective barrier inside the cover. You can use plastic, cardboard, or card stock to prevent the glue from seeping onto the back side of the pillow cover.

Begin by adding permanent fabric glue to the centers of each sunflower and press the brown burlap fabric in place.

Next, begin adding the yellow fabric strips to the petals. Add glue to one petal at a time. Begin at the flower center, twist the fabric, and press it into the glue along the outer edge of the petal. Cut the twisted fabric at the center. Start around round on the inside of the petal and continue to twist, press, and fill until the petal is complete.

Once you complete all the petals, you are ready to finish the sunflower pillow center.

Add Sunflower Accent Pillow Centers

Now, you are ready to complete the sunflower accent pillow by adding the centers.

First, cut apart the knots from the felt fabric. Remove any excess felt from each end of the knot. Then, glue is added to the center of the sunflower, and the knots are pressed into the glue.

Finally, add the knotted gray fabric by circling it around the outer edge of the flower center. Trim away any excess knots, and you can apply them individually to fill in gaps.

Lastly, cut a slim strip of the brown felt to apply as a stem on the flower. Allow the glue to dry overnight before adding your pillow filler.
