This project starts at the bottom edge and works towards the top of the head.
1. With an I hook and variegated yarn, ch 21, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across. (20sts)
2. Ch 1, turn, 2sc in same st, sc in each st until 1 st remains, 2sc in last st. (22sts)
3. Repeat previous row until 30 sts.
4-5. Ch 1, turn, sc in each st to end of row.
6-11. Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st to end of row.
12. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (28sts)
13. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (26sts)
14. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (24sts)
15. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, sc2tog. (22sts)
16. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st and in each st to end of row.
17. Change yarn color if desired (plain for top of owl). Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc2tog. (20sts)
18-19. Ch 2, turn, hdc in same st and in each st to end of row.
20. Ch 2, turn, 2hdc in same st, hdc in each st until 1 st remains, 2hdc in last st. (22sts)
21. On this row, please pay close attention to hdc vs sc. Ch 2, turn, 2hdc in same st, hdc, sc in each st until 2 sts
remain, hdc in next st, 2hdc in last st. (24sts)
22. Ch 2, turn, 2hdc in same st, hdc, sc in each st until 2 sts remain, hdc in next st, 2hdc in last st. (26sts)
23. This step is worked around the outer edge of the owl. Ch 1, sc in same st, sc evenly down side of of the owl, stopping at the color change section. Change to variegated yarn. sc in next st, *ch 2, hdc in same st, sc 2*, repeat to bottom edge. 2sc in first st of bottom row, sc in each st across, working 2sc in the last st. Pivot piece to work up side of owl. Sc 4, *ch 2, hdc in same st, sc 2*, repeat up side, stopping at the color change section. Change to plain yarn. Sc evenly to tip of ear. 3sc in tip of ear. Sl st in each st across, sl st in first st of round. Finish off and weave in ends.
Eyes (make 2)
1. With an H hook and white yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sc sts (or preferred method for creating a circle of 8 sc sts), pull closed and sl st to join. (8sts)
2. Ch 1, 2sc in each st to end of round, sl st to join. (16sts) Fnish off, leaving a long tail for sewing in place.
With a yarn needle and yarn tail, sew each eye to the center top of the owl. See main photo for placement.
With a yarn needle and black yarn, take a few sts in each eye to create a pupil.
Beak
1. Leave a yarn tail in the beginning for sewing beak in place. With an H hook and yellow yarn, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (4sts)
2. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc2tog. (2sts)
3. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog. Finish off and weave in end.
With a yarn needle, use the beginning yarn tail to sew the beginning edge to the face section, overlapping the bottom edge of the eyes.
