Tips
The coasters can be made to a bigger circumference by using Worsted/10ply/Cat. 4 yarn, or by making 12 DC in Round 1 (instead of pattern 10 DC). If starting with 12 DC rather than 10 DC, an additional two { } stitch sequence repeats will be applicable from Round 2 onwards.
In Rounds 5 and 6, ensure chains are made with an even and consistent tension so that the border is the same around the entire circumference and the coasters retain their circular shape.
Pattern Instructions
Note:
Beg Ch 1/Ch 2/Sl St and fin Sl St do not count as a stitch for stitch count purposes.
DCStndSt counts as a DC for stitch count purposes.
FpDCStndSt counts as a FpDC for stitch count purposes.
Make all stitches within ( ) in the same stitch from the previous round.
The stitch sequence within { } should be repeated the number of times specified by the pattern instructions.
A stitch count is provided in brackets ( ) following each round instructions.
If preferred, Alternate Round 3 can be substituted for the standard Round 3.
Beg Circle: Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, make a circle with either MC, or Ch 4 and Sl St into first ch.
Round 1: Ch 2, 10 DC in beg circle, Sl St into first DC. (10 DC)
Round 2: DCStndSt and Puff-4 in first st, DC and Puff-4 in next nine st, Sl St into DCStndSt. (10 DC, 10 Puff-4)
Round 3: FpDCStndSt around first st, (DC, Puff-5, DC) in next st, {FpDC around next st, (DC, Puff-5, DC) in next st} nine times in total, Sl St into FpDCStndSt. (10 FpDC, 20 DC, 10 Puff-5)
Round 4: Note: Work this round with a slightly looser tension. Ch 1, FpSC around first st, SC in next st, {FpSC around next st, SC in next st} nineteen times in total, Invis Join into first FpSC. (20 FpSC, 20 SC)
Round 5: {Ch 5, sk next st, Sl St into BLO next st} twenty times in total (finishing in st that first Ch 5 was made from). (20 Ch 5 Sp, 20 Sl St)
Round 6: Sl St in each of the first three ch (of first Ch 5 Sp) from previous round, {Ch 4, sk next Sl St, Sl St into middle of next Ch 5 Sp} twenty times in total (finishing in Ch 5 Sp that first Ch 4 was made from). (20 Ch 4 Sp, 20 Sl St)
Finishing: Fasten off yarn leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in. Sew in both yarn ends securely on the reverse side of the coaster.
Alternate Round 3: Note: Although more complex, the appearance of the stitches made from this alternate round may be preferred. FpDCStndSt around DCStndSt, DC in sp btwn DCStndSt and first Puff-4, Puff-5 in first Puff-4, DC in sp btwn first Puff-4 and next FpDC, {FpDC around next FpDC, DC in sp btwn FpDC and next Puff-4, Puff-5 in next Puff-4, DC in sp btwn Puff-4 and next FpDC} nine times in total, Sl St into FpDCStndSt. (10 FpDC, 20 DC, 10 Puff-5)
