Yarn-wrapped letter bookmarks are a simple, customizable DIY that adds charm to your reading routine. Using wooden letters, colorful yarn, and a craft stick, you can make a personalized bookmark for yourself or a thoughtful handmade gift.

Here’s what you need to make these Yarn Wrapped Letter Bookmarks:

• Yarn – choose any color/size. Small multi-color packs work well.
• Small Wooden Letters – we got ours from the Dollar store
• Hot glue (adults only)
• Clear Tacky glue
• Jumbo craft sticks
• Optional acrylic paint if you do not get colored craft sticks
• Embellishments – we used small paper flowers
• Other decoration options include glitter foam paper and confetti glitter
• Scissors

Steps to Make Yarn Wrapped Letter Bookmarks

1. Select your yarn. Use complementary colors like blue and yellow, orange and pink or choose a single color to wrap the whole letter with.

2. Start on one area of the letter to wrap. Glue the yarn down to the edge to start and let it dry.

Before you start, make a plan for how you’ll wrap the letter. For example, on a K you might wrap the protruding arms first and the middle with a different color. For an M you could use one color on the top and a different color on the bottom. Some letters may need a double wrap to cover all areas — wrap horizontally first, then vertically if needed.

You can patch any empty spaces with small yarn pieces (or leave small gaps if you like that look).

Think of each part of the letter in sections and wrap section by section. Glue as you go so the yarn sticks securely.

If your letter needs a second wrap, wrap in the opposite direction and secure each strand with glue on the back of the letter.

Some extra wrapping tips:

Work in small sections and patch open areas with short yarn lengths as needed.

Add a small amount of tacky glue underneath the yarn as you wrap and press down until it dries so the yarn stays put.

Go slowly and use just enough glue to avoid sticky, visible residue. The glue dries clear, but too much can make the yarn stiff.

When you reach the end of a section, secure the yarn with a small dab of hot glue on the back of the letter (adults only). Place it near the edge so it stays hidden.

Alternatively, you can tie the yarn end around another loop and double-knot it, though tied ends may be more likely to unravel over time.

3. Glue on a small embellishment – use whatever you like to customize your yarn-wrapped letter!

4. Now hot glue (adults only) your letter onto your jumbo craft stick. You can buy colored craft sticks or paint plain ones with acrylic paint.
