Note: You will recreate this step two times to make both the FRONT and BACK panels of the purse.
Next, using the Orange yarn, HDC the sides of both of the horizontal pieces — about 14 STS for each side.

STEP TWO — Sides and Bottom (One Long Strip)
To create the sides of the purse and the bottom (this will be one long strap). Using the accent color of your choice: CH 8.
R1βR38: CH 1, HDC into all of the STS for the entire Row, turn work and CH 1. Repeat this method until the end of Row 38, where you will SS to complete final work.

STEP THREE — Sew Panels to Strap
Thread your yarn (using corresponding yarn colors) and sew BOTH the FRONT and BACK panels to the long side/bottom strip as shown in the photos. Take care to align edges so the panels match the strip length.

STEP FOUR — Create Open Stitch Spaces for Straps
To create the open STS for the straps: Using the Orange yarn, insert the hook into the TOP of the sewn purse.
R1: HDC, CH 1, HDC into the following ST, CH 1, skip 1 ST, into the next ST HDC. Continue this pattern until you reach the straps on the side. There CH 7 and HDC into the following open ST, then repeat HDC, CH 1, skip 1 ST, HDC into the next ST. Continue this method until the end of the Row and SS to complete final work.

STEP FIVE — Create Chain Straps
To create the chain straps for the cinched purse: CH 85 (make two chains, one for each strap). Thread each chain through the open STS created in STEP FOUR — one chain strap on one side and the other on the opposite side.
STEP SIX — Final Top Strap
To create the final strap for the top of the purse: Into the skipped 7 STS from STEP FOUR, insert the hook into the side of the skipped STS and HDC into the 7 STS, CH 1, and continue HDC until you reach ROW 28 (or as long as you desire) to form the top strap.

Finishing notes: Weave in all ends and block lightly if desired to shape the bag. Adjust strap lengths or the number of rows to customize the size. Enjoy your bright, handmade Crochet Summer Bag!
