Colorful Coffee Filter Butterflies — Easy DIY Craft for Kids & Adults
Bright, inexpensive, and simple to make, coffee filter butterflies are a perfect craft for kids, classrooms, playdates, or a rainy afternoon. Using only coffee filters, washable markers, water, and a pipe cleaner, you can create cheerful, tie-dye–style butterflies in minutes. Below are step-by-step instructions, helpful tips, and the supplies you'll need to get started.

Supplies You’ll Need
2x coffee filters
Washable markers (use saturated, bright colors)
A spray bottle with water (or a large paintbrush, pipette or a glass dropper)
1x pipe cleaner (10′ long)

How to Make Coffee Filter Butterflies
Step 1. Prepare a work surface and flatten your coffee filters. If you want multiple identical butterflies, stack filters before coloring so the marker will bleed through and transfer the design.
Step 2. Decorate the filters with washable markers. Draw patterns, dots, or concentric rings—bright, saturated colors give the best results.
Step 3. Apply water to the colored filters. A spray bottle produces a soft tie-dye effect; an eyedropper or brush gives more controlled blending. The water will spread and blend the marker ink across the filter.
Step 4. Separate the filters and place them somewhere safe to dry. Depending on how wet they are, this can take a few hours; you can leave them overnight to be sure.
Step 5. Once completely dry, accordion-fold each filter in approximately 1/3" (a narrow fold) along the length to create the wing pleats.
Step 6. Make sure the folds hold together—press or crease gently so the fold doesn't unfold when handled.
Step 7. Pinch the folded filter in the middle to form the butterfly silhouette and crease lightly to define the wings.

Step 8. Wrap a pipe cleaner around the pinched center and twist to secure. Bend the remaining ends into antennae and curl them for extra character.
Step 9. Gently spread and fluff the wings to the desired shape—each butterfly will look unique depending on the folds and color patterns.
Step 10. Repeat to make a collection. These butterflies work well as simple decorations, garlands, or glued onto cards and crafts.
Tips: Use washable markers to avoid permanent stains. Protect your workspace while applying water, and experiment with different water application methods for varied effects.
