Turn Plastic Bottles into a Charming Bird Water Feeder — Easy Upcycled DIY

Making an upcycled plastic bottle bird water feeder is an easy, budget-friendly project that gives single-use bottles a second life and provides clean water for backyard birds. This step-by-step guide walks you through the supplies and safe assembly steps to build a simple gravity-fed feeder that hangs from a branch or sits on a porch shelf.

Keep the feeder clean and refill regularly to prevent algae and mosquito larvae. Use caution when working with a soldering iron and hot glue; wear protective gloves and work on a heat-safe surface.

Supplies Needed

  • Empty plastic gallon bottle
  • Empty plastic soft drink or water bottle (16 oz or larger)
  • 12" strip of 1"x4" wood
  • Floral wire (heavy-duty)
  • Screw and bolt
  • Soldering iron (or hammer and nail for holes)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks

Clean and dry the gallon jug and the smaller water/soft-drink bottle before starting.

Step 1 — Prepare the Bottles

Remove labels and wash both bottles thoroughly, then let them dry completely. Cut the larger (gallon) bottle so the remaining base is about 3–4 inches tall. This will be the feeder base.

Cut the gallon jug to create a shallow base that will hold the water-dispensing cap.

Step 2 — Make the Drain Hole in the Base

Use a soldering iron (or hammer and nail) to melt or punch a hole in the center of the bottom of the gallon-sized base. This hole will accept the smaller bottle cap assembly.

Create a centered hole in the base for the bottle-cap attachment.

Step 3 — Prepare the Small Bottle Cap

Use the soldering iron to melt a hole through the center of the smaller bottle's cap. This cap will act as a valve when attached to the base.

Melt a hole in the small bottle cap so water can pass when inverted.

Step 4 — Secure the Cap to the Base

Insert the bottle cap into the hole you made in the gallon base, with the cap on the inside. Fasten it in place using the screw and bolt. Apply hot glue around the cap on both sides (inside and outside) to seal and secure it.

Attach the small cap through the base with a screw and bolt, then seal with hot glue.

Apply hot glue around the cap edges inside and outside to prevent leaks.

Step 5 — Mount the Base to the Wood

Hot glue the sealed base to the center of the 1"x4" wood strip. This provides a stable platform for birds to perch while drinking.

Glue the feeder base to the wood board to create a small landing shelf for birds.

Step 6 — Prepare the Water Reservoir

Make a few small holes around the neck of the smaller water bottle (just below the cap) using the soldering iron. These holes allow water to trickle out slowly when inverted and attached to the base.

Heat small holes around the bottle neck so water can flow out gradually.

Step 7 — Fill and Assemble

Fill the smaller bottle with water, screw it into the cap assembly on the base, then invert the whole assembly so the water reservoir sits on top. The water should trickle out of the neck holes into the base tray for birds to drink.

Fill the reservoir, attach it to the base, and invert to allow water to fill the tray.

Step 8 — Add a Hanger

Create a hanger with heavy-duty floral wire. Wrap a piece of wire around the bottle toward the top and secure by twisting the ends. Then add a longer looped wire to form a handle for hanging. Twist connections tightly so the feeder hangs securely.

Wrap and twist floral wire around the bottle to form a secure hanger.

Once the hanger is secure, hang the feeder from a tree branch or place it on a sheltered porch shelf. Check daily for debris, algae, or leaks and refill as needed.
