Supplies
You only need two things to make these stars!
- Paper Straws: Check craft stores like Hobby Lobby for fun designs, or check Amazon – this set of Christmas straws would make cute ornaments!
- Twine: I used jute twine from the dollar store, but any twine or string that fits through the straws should work just fine!
Instructions:
Cut and Thread Straws
You’ll start by cutting three straws in half, making six short straws. Set one aside and make sure the other five are all the same length. Then cut about a yard of twine.
Thread all five straws onto the twine, one after another. Make sure there is a tail of twine at the beginning and end of the straws, then tie those tails together. Do not pull the twine super tight before tying, allow it to have just a little slack. Then tie the twine tails together again about 2-3 inches above the straws to create a hanging loop.
Create the Star
Now you have a pentagon shape. A few quick folds will turn this into a star! Start with the loop of twine at the top. Grab the horizontal straw at the bottom and flip it, as shown below.
Keep holding the horizontal straw, and fold it up to create a star shape.
Now you just need to tuck the top of the star (where the twine is) under that horizontal straw so the star stays in place. Gently slide the top of the star to the right corner and gently work to pull it through the corner so it’s in front of the horizontal straw. Be careful not to bend the straws. (If you cannot get the top through without bending the straws that means you tied the twine too tight. Try again with a little bit of slack in the twine.)
Finally, grab the two bottom points of the star and pull them apart to reveal your star!
