Step 1: Trim Coffee Filters To Look Like Cabbage Leaves

Start with a small stack of coffee filters folded in half. Use scissors to trim a curvy, leaf-like edge across the folded stack so you get multiple matching leaves at once. The wavy edge will help mimic natural cabbage leaves.

Step 2: Stain Coffee Filters

Prepare a staining mixture using coffee-stained water plus green food coloring. Submerge individual coffee filters into the mixture. If the color is too flat, add some green craft paint to create darker and lighter areas that give the leaves a more realistic depth and texture.

Step 3: How To Dry Stained Coffee Filters

Drying options: let the filters air dry, or speed the process in a microwave or oven. For the microwave method, place 4–5 stained filters on a paper plate, keeping some heavy stain areas and light wrinkling, and microwave on high for 1 minute at a time, rearranging until dry. For the oven, use a low temperature (200–250°F) and check often, leaving them only a few minutes at a time. Do not leave the stove unattended with the paper coffee filters inside.

Step 4: Assemble Decorative Cabbage

Once dry, begin assembling the cabbage around a cup, glass, or small tin can. Fold each coffee filter leaf and tuck or wrap it around the rim of the container. Add a small dab of hot glue at the rim, then overlap the next leaf about half over the previous one. Continue layering around the rim for 2–3 rounds until you reach the desired fullness; about 12–15 leaves worked well for this size.
