Create Charming Hot Air Balloon Party Favors — Easy DIY Tutorial
Add a whimsical, handmade touch to your next party with these adorable hot air balloon favors. This easy DIY uses colorful cardstock and tiny baskets to create bite-sized tokens that work great for baby showers, birthdays, or themed events. Below you'll find a clear materials list, step-by-step instructions, and helpful tips to customize your favors.

Materials needed:
- Several shades of brightly colored cardstock
- Hot Air Balloon template (printable)
- Scissors
- Mini baskets or small craft baskets
- Hot glue gun (or craft glue)
- Toothpicks
- Pencil
- Sewing machine (optional — alternatives listed below)
Step-by-step instructions
- Print the Hot Air Balloon template and cut out the paper template shape.
- Trace the balloon shape onto different colors of cardstock and cut out each shape. For a layered look, stack 2–3 cardstock sheets and cut them at once.
- Stack the cut balloon shapes and run them through a sewing machine with a straight stitch down the center to create the balloon "ribs." If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can hand-stitch with a needle and thread or glue the layers together with craft glue and add thin scored lines for texture.
- Carefully unfold and open the stitched balloon shapes so they fan out slightly and form the rounded balloon look.
- Prepare the mini basket: remove or shorten the handle if needed. Insert two toothpicks into opposite sides of the basket where the handle was. Add a small dab of hot glue to secure the toothpicks for extra strength.
- Attach the toothpicks to the bottom of the balloon with hot glue so the basket hangs beneath the balloon shape. Hold briefly until set.
- Fill each basket with small treats like jelly beans, mints, or tiny notes. Optionally add a small ribbon or gift tag for personalization.
Finishing touches & tips
- Vary sizes by enlarging or reducing the template to make a display with visual interest.
- Personalize favors with initials or small name tags for place settings.
- If gifting edible treats, choose individually wrapped candies for hygiene and longer freshness.
- To transport favors, place them in a shallow box with tissue paper to prevent shifting.
