DIY Crushed Glass Coasters: Easy Step-by-Step Guide for Sparkling Custom Coasters

Make bright, custom coasters using cork bases, crushed glass filler and Dimensional Magic for a glossy, glass-like finish. This simple project is great for adding a splash of color to your coffee table or creating handmade gifts. Below are clear supplies, step-by-step instructions, drying times and helpful tips to get professional-looking results.

Supplies

  • Cork coasters
  • Decorative filler (crushed glass shown; other fillers like small beads or shells also work)
  • Spray paint (for the coaster base)
  • Mod Podge Dimensional Magic (or similar pour-on clear dimensional glue)
  • Protective gloves and a well-ventilated workspace

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace: cover the surface with paper or a drop cloth and wear gloves. Work in a ventilated area when using spray paint.
  2. Spray-paint the top face of each cork coaster and let dry completely according to the spray paint instructions.
  3. Pour a thin, even layer of crushed glass (or other decorative filler) into the painted coaster. You only need a shallow layer so the filler will be covered by the glue.
  4. Pour Mod Podge Dimensional Magic over the filler. Work slowly to allow the glue to flow and submerge the filler so nothing sticks out. Smooth gently if needed to remove large air pockets.
  5. One container of Dimensional Magic will typically fill about four standard coasters. Check the product label for coverage details.
  6. Allow the coasters to dry undisturbed for about 24 hours or until fully set and glossy. Drying times may vary with humidity and room temperature.

Tips & variations

  • If bubbles form, lightly pass a heat gun or hair dryer on low several inches away to release them—don’t overheat the glue.
  • Try metallic or matte spray paint for different backgrounds that change how the crushed glass looks.
  • Use silicone or a level surface to keep coasters flat while drying.
  • For extra protection, add felt pads to the coaster bottoms to prevent scratching furniture.

Care

Wipe coasters with a damp cloth. Avoid soaking or placing very hot items directly on the Dimensional Magic surface.
