Transform Tin Cans Into Colorful Planters Using Old Clothes Scraps (Easy DIY Upcycle)

Give old tin cans a new life with this simple, budget-friendly DIY: wrap them in fabric strips cut from worn clothes to create cheerful, eco-friendly planters. This project is great for beginner crafters and upcyclers—it's fast, uses materials you already have, and yields unique containers for small houseplants, herbs, or succulents.

Before you start: clean and dry your can thoroughly, take care with any sharp edges, and choose non-toxic adhesives and materials if you’ll be planting directly in the can.

Materials

  • Clean, dry tin can (labels removed)
  • Old clothes or fabric scraps cut into strips
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun or strong fabric adhesive
  • Optional: sandpaper or a file for smoothing sharp edges

Tips and safety

Clean and sanitize the can: Wash with warm, soapy water and dry completely. Be cautious of sharp edges; sand lightly to remove burrs. Use non-toxic fabric materials and adhesives to keep plants safe. Consider adding drainage: if you plan to pot directly in the can, drill or punch a small hole in the bottom and add a layer of small stones for better drainage.

Step-by-step

1. Prepare your materials and workspace. Lay out the fabric strips by color or pattern.

2. Cut fabric strips to lengths that will wrap around the can. Vary the width for different looks.

3. Apply glue: work in small sections. Apply a thin line or small dots of hot glue to the can and press the fabric strip onto the glued area.

4. Wrap and secure: continue wrapping the strip around the can, adding glue as needed until the strip ends meet. Trim any excess fabric neatly.

5. Layer strips: repeat with additional strips, overlapping slightly to cover the can’s surface. Alternate colors or create patterns for visual interest.

6. Embellish (optional): add ribbon, buttons, paint details, or studs once the fabric is secure.

7. Finish: press all fabric down firmly and let adhesive cure fully before planting or displaying. If you used a cold glue, allow sufficient drying time as recommended by the adhesive manufacturer.

Note: In this project I used bias tape edges from some old underwear that I had washed thoroughly before crafting. Use any clean fabric scraps you have—shirt hems, dresses, or leftover trims all work well.
